The Relationship Between Overprotection and Vocational Rehabilitation among Students with Intellectual Disabilities According to the Perspective of Their Parents
Abstract
The current research aimed to discuss the relationship between parental overprotection of students with intellectual disabilities and vocational rehabilitation from the perspective of their parents. It has adopted the descriptive-correlational approach via a questionnaire with a sample of 188 parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities in Makkah. Findings indicated a negative relationship between parental overprotection and vocational rehabilitation. The results showed no statistically significant differences between males and females according to the gender variable. Differences were found in the relationship between overprotection and vocational training according to age, favoring those under 30 years old, followed by those aged 31 to 50 and finally those over 51. No differences were found based on educational qualifications, nor family economic status. The findings also indicated that there is a strong, statistically significant positive correlation (α ≤ 0.05) between overprotection and vocational training and employment.
