Technology-Driven School Leadership: Examining the Role of Digital Innovation in Achieving Educational Excellence in Africa

Abstract

Digital technology has revolutionized education so drastically that school leaders are rethinking their traditional administrative and pedagogical practices. In Africa, technology-based school leadership is a key driver of educational success as the continent is still plagued with infrastructure deficiencies in the educational system, lack of leadership capacity and lack of policy frameworks so that educational excellence is achieved. This study presents a literature review exploring the role of digital innovation in driving educational excellence in Africa with focus on Microsoft Innovative Schools, AI, and digital learning ecosystems. By synthesizing and analyzing the literature to understand how the current practices, challenges and opportunities for digital transformation are harnessed to assess how structured technology leadership models can be adapted and implemented in schools in Africa. The digital transformation in schools across the continent is uneven, with large disparities between urban and rural schools. Challenges such as funding shortages, erratic power supply, resource shortages, and lack of technical support continue to hamper effective implementation. Models like Microsoft Innovative Schools program are promising options to develop technology leadership capacity. AI and digital learning ecosystems are emerging as the technology frontier with models like Nigeria's Study Better AI as a case study where people can solve their problems locally. But AI usage in school administration in Africa is still very embryonic and is constrained by limited digital acumen, policy alignment, ethical concerns, and strategic vision. We concluded that technology-driven school leadership is vital for educational excellence in Africa and can be achieved through investment in the leadership development, infrastructure, policy, and capacity building of schools. School leaders have to develop strategic vision and digital skills, working together to build networks that embrace inclusive and local approach to technology integration. This review contributes to the growing body of knowledge on educational technology leadership in Africa and offers guidance for the policymakers, practitioners, and researchers interested in promoting digital transformation in a school.
