Evaluation of Antibacterial Activities of Taraxacum farinosum Hausskn. Et Bornm and Taraxacum mirabile Wagenitz Extracts

Abstract


In this study, antimicrobial activities of endemic Taraxacum farinosum Hausskn. Et Bornm. and Taraxacum mirabile Wagenitz species belonging to genus Tarxacum used as medicinal plant were investigated. Chloroform, aceton and methanol extracts of plants were tested against eight bacteria strains at 25 mg/ml dose level in experiments. Disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods were performed both for two species. In experiments commercial gentamicin (10 µg/disc) and ampicillin (10 µg/disc) discs and gentamicin solution at a concentration of 10 mg/ml were used as positive control. Dimethyl sulfoxide: Phosphate Buffered Saline (DMSO:PBS; 1:1) solution were employed as negative control. In disc diffusion method it has been determined that only chloroform and aceton extracts of Taraxacum mirabile have a weak antibacterial activity(eight mm inhibition zone) against Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) ATCC 25923, but the same activity couldn't be determined by broth microdilution method. As a results it has been concluded that none of the extracts of Taraxacum farinosum and Taraxacum mirabile have no potential antibacterial activity against bacteria strains tested.
