Resource Sharing through RSS towards Learning Management System

Mustafa Ali Akca, Betül Aydın

Abstract

Today, many learning management systems (LMS) developed in different programming languages are available. Users may access these systems with open-source code, free or paid. In addition, many business and educational institutions have developed systems specific to their organizations in line with their strategic goals and needs. Due to such differences as software and the intended use, sharing information source among these systems cannot be done. To solve this problem, a web service model through which all teaching management systems will be aware of one another has been developed. With this model, when an educator using LMS in University ‘A’ logs in weekly lecture notes, s/he opens them optionally sharing, after that teaching management systems of the Universities ‘B’ and ‘C’ following the University ‘A’ through RSS technology will be informed, the same content can be used if desired by their own institutions as well. Through this developed system, it is aimed to increase resource sharing between educational institutions and allow learners to benefit from different sources for the same course. Design model of the system is enhanced with Classic ASP and presented in a form that can be adaptable to all LMS.

Key words: LMS, web service, resource sharing
