The Integrated Economy–Environment–Industry Business Life Cycle Theory: An Integrative Theory of Organizational Evolution

Ugwu, Felix Ikechukwu

Abstract

Business Life Cycle (BLC) theory has long provided an important foundation for understanding patterns of organizational growth and development. However, most existing Business Life Cycle models conceptualize organizational evolution as a sequence of predetermined developmental stages, providing only limited explanation of how organizations continuously adapt to dynamic economic, environmental, industrial, and competitive conditions. This limitation has become increasingly significant as organizations operate within environments characterized by rapid technological change, globalization, institutional complexity, and growing demands for resilience and sustainability. Addressing this theoretical gap, this paper deveops the Integrated Economy–Environment–Industry Business Life Cycle Theory (IEIBLCT) as an integrative theory of organizational evolution. Building upon the Integrated Economy–Environment–Industry Business Life Cycle (IEIBLC) Framework, the theory synthesizes insights from Business Life Cycle Theory, strategic management, business forecasting, dynamic capabilities, organizational resilience, and sustainability scholarship into a unified explanatory system. The IEIBLCT proposes that organizational evolution is driven by the continuous interaction among External Strategic Intelligence, generated through Economic Analysis, Environmental Analysis, and Industry Analysis, Business Forecasting, Strategic Organizational Capabilities, and Business Sustainability within a recursive process of organizational adaptation and renewal. By shifting the analytical focus from stage-based organizational progression to continuous strategic adaptation, the theory provides a broader explanation of how organizations sustain competitiveness and long-term viability in increasingly uncertain business environments. The paper contributes to Business Life Cycle scholarship by introducing an integrative theoretical perspective that extends existing models, establishes a foundation for future empirical investigation, and provides researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive framework for understanding organizational evolution in the twenty-first century.
