GROS PLAN SUR LE FRANÇAIS LANGUE ETRANGERE AU GHANA: PERSPECTIVES ET ENJEUX

Alfred Agbeh

Abstract

This article is a reflection on the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language in schools in Ghana. It discusses the difficulties of teaching the language in different educational contexts. The existential problem is about the attitudes and mentality of Ghanaians with regard to the French language.

The monotonous rhetoric is that “Ghana is surrounded by Francophone countries…”, and for many people, that is sufficient reason to learn French. While the availability of the subject in various institutions to potential learners is not one that we can boast of as a country, the demand is not encouraging either. The critical thing to do is to increase the offer, perfect the quality and improve on its delivery. This is a responsibility which falls not only on the teacher but on all the social, political and educational partners.
