Radio Wave Attenuation Character in Mine Tunnel: a field study

Lonnie Howser

Abstract

It is widely agreed that the radio waves are more complex in confined environments, such as coal mine tunnels and buildings. In this paper tried to interpret propagation characterists of radio wave in the confined environments of mine tunnel. We applied the Maxwell equation and boundary condition of tunnel. The attenuation coefficients of electric field in horizontal and vertical polarization are deduced through the traveling wave condition of confined space. The attenuation characters of different position transmitter in rectangular mine tunnels are also simulated first with Matlab, then in an experimental tunnel. Influential factors of the attenuation character of radio waves in mine tunnel were analyzed and simulated.
